Children's Yellow Waterproof Rain Jacket

This rain jacket is engineered for children aged 3 to 12 years, providing reliable protection against precipitation while maintaining comfort during active outdoor use. The design prioritizes functional durability over aesthetic appeal, incorporating technical fabrics and construction methods suited to repeated exposure to moisture, wind, and mechanical stress from play.

The outer shell utilizes a 100% polyester plain weave with a hydrophilic polyurethane (PU) coating applied to the interior surface. This coating achieves a hydrostatic head rating of 5,000 mm, meaning it can withstand the pressure of a 5-meter column of water before leakage occurs—sufficient for moderate to heavy rain. The coating is microporous, allowing water vapor transmission to reduce internal condensation during physical activity.

Seams are sealed using ultrasonic welding or heat-activated tape applied to all stitched joints. This process eliminates capillary pathways where water could penetrate through needle holes. Seam sealing is performed after assembly to ensure continuity, with tape width minimum 20 mm and adhesive bond strength tested to exceed 1.5 N/mm under ASTM D903.

The jacket features a three-panel hood with adjustable drawcords toggled at the sides, allowing fit adjustment without requiring knots. The hood brim is reinforced with a semi-rigid PE insert to maintain shape and shed water away from the face. Peripheral visibility is maintained through a 180-degree field of view, verified via mannequin testing.

Closure is via a center-front coil zipper with a storm flap overlapping by 25 mm on each side. The flap secures with two parallel rows of snap fasteners spaced 50 mm apart, preventing wind-driven water ingress. The zipper pull is molded from thermoplastic rubber (TPR) with a textured surface for gloved or wet-hand operation.

Ventilation is provided through two underarm eyelets, each 6 mm in diameter, covered with hydrophobic mesh to block liquid water while permitting vapor escape. These are positioned in the high-sweat zones identified via thermal mapping of child wearers during moderate activity (equivalent to 4 METs).

Cuffs and hem use elasticized polyester ribbing with 15% spandex core, providing 100% recovery after 50% stretch. The hem drawcord is internal, exiting through two bar-tacked eyelets, and secured with a cord lock to prevent accidental release during use.

The high-visibility yellow color (Pantone 109 C equivalent) uses a UV-stable azo dye formulation, tested for fade resistance after 40 hours of xenon arc exposure (ISO 105-B02). This ensures the garment maintains its conspicuity in low-light conditions over multiple seasons, reducing the risk of visual loss in crowded or dim environments.

Sizing follows ISO 8559-1:2017 for children’s wear, with chest circumference ranging from 56 cm (size 3–4) to 78 cm (size 11–12). Sleeve length and back length are graded proportionally to maintain ergonomic fit across the range. Pattern grading includes ease allowances: 6 cm at chest, 4 cm at waist, and 8 cm at hip to accommodate layering and movement.

Care instructions recommend machine washing at 30°C on a gentle cycle, tumble drying low, and avoiding fabric softeners or bleach. The PU coating retains 90% of its initial hydrostatic head after 20 wash cycles per AATCC Test Method 127. Reproofing is not required under normal use; however, surface wetting can be restored by low-heat ironing (110°C max) through a cotton cloth.

This product is intended for general outdoor recreation, school commutes, and light hiking in temperate climates. It is not designed for prolonged exposure to extreme weather, alpine conditions, or chemical splashes. For such applications, technical shells with higher hydrostatic head ratings (10,000+ mm) and breathable membranes (e.g., ePTFE) are recommended.
